2016 Scholarship Recipients Announced!
April 11, 2016
The Southern Rivers Energy Trust recently awarded $15,000 in scholarships to students residing in the co-op's nine county service area including: Bibb, Coweta, Crawford, Lamar, Meriwether, Monroe, Pike, Spalding and Upson. The scholarship is funded by SRE's Operation Round Up program where members "round up" their electric bill the next dollar and donate the extra change to be distributed via a Trust that is governed by a volunteer board comprised of SRE members throughout the entire service area.
In addition to funding projects from deserving charitable community organizations and individuals, the Trust also funds the SRE Trust Scholarship program and the Bright Ideas teacher grant program. Bright Ideas and the SRE Trust Scholarship program combined will distribute $30,000 directly to education this year. This is in addition to any general Operation Round Up grants schools may receive.
This year the Trust received 35 qualified applications that were judged blindly by a panel of retired teachers based on GPA and four short essays in which the applicants describe how they demonstrate the same core values in their lives that Touchstone Energy Cooperatives like Southern Rivers Energy incorporate in their business model. Those values are innovation, integrity, accountability and commitment to community.
This year's recipients are:
- Mary Elissa Chandler of Williamson from Pike County High School
- Carson Diane Flake of Concord from Faith Christian Academy
- Alexandra Hope Martinez of Griffin from Spalding High School
- Erin Rose Owens of Forsyth from Mary Persons High School and The United States Marines
- Joseph Connor Scarborough of Milner from Pike County High School
Congratulations to each of these students!
