Update on Broadband Legislation
Georgia legislators are considering a bill, House Bill 23 sponsored by Rep. Penny Houston (R-Nashville) which allows EMCs to engage in broadband services and creates common sense cross-subsidization protections that ensure consumer protection and fair competition.
Broadband access for rural Georgia is a vital issue that our state is facing and EMCs, while not a silver bullet, provide another important option to communities and Georgia families who've grown desperate for this essential service.
While Southern Rivers Energy has no plans to begin providing broadband service, this legislation provides an opportunity for any EMC in the state to partner with other providers to help expand services in rural areas with little to no access. We ask you to join us in supporting legislation that opens the door for additional pathways to bridge the digital divide in rural Georgia.
